Why Early Matters

We Must Act Now

Quality learning environments – whether at home with supportive and nurturing families or in classroom settings – significantly improve kindergarten readiness, 3rd grade reading mastery, high school graduation rates, post high school education/credentialing and workforce readiness. We envision a community where high quality early learning environments are available to all children. To achieve this vision the Dallas community must be coordinated, intentional and results oriented.

Data shows that no school system is able to graduate more students
than the number who are kindergarten ready.

In Dallas County today, 16,852 children are not ready for Kindergarten

Our goal is for 80% of students to be ready for Kindergarten (Up from 57% in Fall 2014)

If students are not reading on grade level by 3rd grade
they are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.

24,694 3rd graders not reading on college ready pace

Our goal is for 60% of students to be reading on college ready pace by 2025. (up from 34% in 2015)

There are many factors that contribute to a child reading on pace in 3rd grade. To support the 350,000 children age 0-8 across the county, a strategic plan has been developed to guide our work, track county -wide progress, and hold us accountable.
